Lecture Series and Classics

The Hau Classics of Ethnographic Theory series aims to provide access to invited lectures series, unpublished scholarship, or out-of-print classics that are valuable for both research and teaching. They are intended to illustrate the contribution of ethnographically-inspired insights to larger debates in anthropology and the human sciences. To highlight the continued relevance and interest of these works, prominent contemporary anthropologists provide original commentary in the form of introductions, prefaces, or afterwords to these volumes.

We include here the publications arising out of some of the Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures, a series of four talks presented by renowned anthropologists at the invitation of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Rochester in New York. To be invited to give these lectures is one of the most prestigious honors an anthropologist can receive. HAU has published this selection of Morgan Lectures in collaboration with the University of Rochester; others are published by Duke University Press.

The Hau Masterclass series is dedicated to the publication of seminal lecture series by key influential anthropologists. The series is inspired by the lectures of anthropologists, intellectuals, and writers published elsewhere. Each Masterclass volume features an introduction authored by a leading anthropologist, contextualizing the work—its conception, delivery and influence. The Masterclass series will appeal to students wishing to understand complex thinkers in an approachable way; professors interested in material that effectively communicates core theories of major anthropologists; busy academics who want to quickly become conversant in the work of major scholars; and members of the general public who are simply curious to know more about anthropology.
